A big field, a chance to to put together a valve bet, a fun atmosphere, kinda makes it easy to watch.

NBC has done a good job of promoting its high rating for the Derby, but that figure only includes the race segment, which is about a 50-minute window that encompasses the race.

The other sports you mention are an overall rating for the length of the contest, so comparing the 50 minutes of Derby coverage isn't the same as comparing a 3-hour game.

The problem is network television doesn't know how to package horse racing effectively.

With football and baseball, they don't have to worry about filling a couple of hours waiting for the action because it's constant action.

Plus, they need to put some real photographers, not mere camera operators behind those live units.

The only "money" shot in the whole pre-race build up was the tight shot of Calvin getting misty eyed on the parade.
