Check back with me on Wednesday
With Eskendereya now out of the Kentucky Derby, the Wednesday Derby Day Post Draw becomes particularly intriguing. Don't expect any announcement on if the filly Devil May Care will definitely run until after the Draw.
I suspect Todd Pletcher will enter Devil May Care in both the Oaks and the Derby, see what type of post position she gets in both and than go from there. With Eskendereya out, value goes down on everyone else. I was looking for some really nice horses at between 8-1 and 12-1. There will still be some value for Horse Racing Betting on the Derby, it will just take more work to find it with Esky now out.
Who will be in the final 20? Basically if Devil May Care is in, Jackson Bend is out. This of course assumes no other defections such as another Pletcher horse Interactiff. On the bench behind Jackson Bend if others defect are Backtalk followed by Make Music for Me.
The Derby has reverted to its traditional "blind draw" format and will be conducted at noon (EDT) on Wednesday, April 28, at Churchill Downs. It used to be covered live on ESPN, but in their quest to cover less and less racing each year, they dropped the coverage in 2009. For the best coverage of the Derby Draw coverage on Wednesday count on the Thoroughbred Bloggers Alliance homepage at tbablogs.com

Tuning in to the Breeders Cup
With the 2 Day Breeders Cup at Santa Anita Park only days away I find myself still trying to muster up some excitement. I would guess I am not the only one that is looking more forward to the 2010 BC when it returns to dirt at Churchill Downs and than hopefully to Belmont Park in 2011.
The action starts on Friday and for those not actually out west ESPN2 will broadcast from 3:30 till 7:00 pm. On Saturday ABC has it from 1:30 -3:30 with ESPN taking over from 3:30 till 7:00 pm.
As for the TV ratings, look for the Friday rating to be flat compared to last years rating figure of 0.3. Last year on Saturday, ABC drew a 1.3 and ESPN drew a 1.0. I expect the ABC number to be the same or a tad lower than last year. I see ESPN drawing a tick higher than 1.0 as maybe some casual viewers tune in to see what the Zenyatta story is all about.

Don't Blink
We now enter the time of year when times seems to speed up and the days although filled with daylight seem to pass so quickly. It seems you reach the 4th of July Holiday, than you blink and Labor Day is upon us.
On the racing front, we enter such a busy time. Starting this holiday weekend we have a stakes filled card at Belmont and Monmouth Park and Hollywood Park out west has the American Oaks.
Opening Day at Delmar is only 19 days away and Opening Day at Saratoga will be here in just 26 days.
The Churchill Downs meet ends on July 4th. Churchill track officials are beaming with last nights "Downs after Dark" night racing experiment drawing 33,481. The 3 night experiment drew 27,623, 28,011 and last nights high of 33,481. I had read that some people feared with college over that the final night would not draw but those fears were put too rest. The old adage of putting out a usable product with great customer service and fair pricing worked for the night racing experiment.
On the Churchill Downs website you will find a poll where you can vote on whether to keep the experiment going as part of the regular meet schedule. I'm no Nostradamus, but this seems like a 1-9 lock on a "Yes" vote.

PETA and Churchill
Churchill Downs Inc. President Bob Evans has agreed to a meeting between CDI executives and PETA Representatives. While I support all honest efforts to improve Horse Safety at the Track, I wonder where PETA comes up with their proposals which include banning racing of 2 year old horses, putting a limit on the number of races a horse can run in a year and changing to all synthetic surfaces. I am not a doctor, but not running a horse at 2 years old seems like telling your teenager running on the High School Track Team would be dangerous for him because he is not yet fully grown and his bones are not fully formed yet. Seems crazy to me, how about you?
